Structural analysis of a Coulomb lattice in a dusty plasma.

چکیده
Pair and bond-orientational correlation functions and structure factors, asused in colloidal science, are applied as quantitative indicators of the phase of the newly discovered "plasma crystals." These Coulomblattice structures are formed by charged microspheres levitated in glow discharge plasmas and are imaged photographically. Static structural analysis is demonstrated on the experimental data of Thomas et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 73, 652, {1994)) and interpreted in the context of a two-dimensional (2D) dislocation-unbinding melting theory and a 2D density-wave melting theory.

Charge gradient effects on modulated dust lattice wave packets in dusty plasma crystals
Nonlinear Dust lattice modes are studied in a hexagonal two-dimensional dusty plasma lattice, in presence of charge gradient of dust particles. In this lattice, such gradients affect nonlinear behavior of dust lattice waves. The amplitude modulation of off-plane transverse dust lattice wave packets is investigated considering the anisotropy of interactions, caused by the height-dependent char...
متن کاملMicroscopic dynamics in two-dimensional strongly-coupled dusty plasmas
A strongly-coupled plasma is a collection of free charged particles that interact with a Coulomb repulsion that is so strong that nearby particles do not easily move past one another. Unlike weakly-coupled plasmas, strongly-coupled plasmas exhibit a self-organization of particles into an arrangement like a solid crystalline lattice or a liquid. Dusty plasmas consist of micron-size particles of ...
متن کاملInvestigating Dusty Plasma of Cometary Coma with Nasa Stardust Data
Introduction: Harbingers of doom or prophesy for the ancient peoples of Earth, comets are now understood to be primordial fragments from our Solar System's birth composed of various ices and dust species. Among the questions surrounding comets and their elusive character are the properties and processes of the rarefied gasses and disperse dust that surround their solid nucleus. Dusty, or comple...
متن کاملParticle interaction measurements in a Coulomb crystal using caged-particle motion.
A technique for characterizing the particle interaction potential of a Coulomb crystal is developed. The mean-square displacement (MSD) is measured, showing both caged- and superdiffusive-particle motions. By subtracting the center of mass of neighboring particles in computing MSD, only short-wavelength particle motions are retained. This yields the lattice Einstein frequency, which contains in...
متن کاملDusty plasmas and applications in space and industry
A dusty plasma is an ionized gas containing dust particles, with sizes ranging from tens of nanometers to hundreds of microns. The interaction of the dust particles with the plasma and ambient environment results in a charging of the dust grains. This Chapter summarizes our basic knowledge of dusty plasmas with applications in space, industry and the laboratory. The Introduction (Section 1) pro...
